A Garden of Surprises
Nancy and Buz Gaver
2423 Rosewood Court
Nancy Gaver’s spontaneous garden is the result of careful planning and thoughtful planting, resulting in a garden of great charm. The lot is heavily wooded and threaded with curving paths that reveal surprise vistas or whimsical groups of objects—a birdhouse village, lanterns, a cluster of antique implements, figures of rabbits and birds tucked into low foliage. Hardscape is minimal—a central brick entrance path, others of stepping stones bordered by low ivy. The winding side paths, punctuated by circles rimmed with distinctive plantings, lead past trellises and vines to an expansive back lawn overlooked by a deck and stone-wall
ed crescent herb garden. Ringed by hydrangeas, iris, and low borders of bishop’s weed and lamium in silver white contrast to the foot-wide stripe of chartreuse creeping jenny. The lawn features islands of seating areas, a birdbath, a grapevine-sheltered bench. At the garden’s foot, a potting shed is framed by an elegant trellis flanked by urns, reminiscent of a classic garden “folly.”
